Visions2030: Earth Edition

The centerpiece of Earth Edition consists of three interlocking geodesic domes featuring 180-degree immersive projections and sonic experiences. Participants are invited to a journey of creative engagement to imagine their own ideal eco-futures. In the final dome, personal eco-futuristic imaginings are rendered through interactive AI imaging technologies, into images that are immediately projected in a digital art gallery of collective visioning. Created in partnership with Visions2030 by Minds Over Matter (formerly Obscura Digital), this collaboration strives to speak to the imaginations of people of all backgrounds within a context of local and global communities.

After participants envision their ideal eco-future in the Lumisphere, they can enter the Mentoring Tent, where they can meet with guides to work out action steps and have armchair conversations with leading figures in fields such as energy, ecological remediation, transportation, future economies, traditional ecological knowledge, government policy, ocean, biodiversity, housing, water, pollution, health, and disaster preparedness. The Mentoring Tent provides informational displays, speaker sessions, and a library with supporting materials. The goal is to offer participants opportunities to connect with initiatives, organizations, businesses, activists, and fellow travelers.

This node highlights the work of eco-minded thinkers and doers in the fields of agriculture, marine industrial evolution, urban gardening, soil, drought, wildfire remediation, fashion and food industries, and beyond. Aimed to stimulate the imagination in all areas and deepen engagement with lifestyle-shifting innovations, products, and educators, EcoExpo will host participatory events and demonstrations that showcase the green economy already thriving in Southern California, and elsewhere.

Spearheaded by world-renowned hacker and futurist John Threat, Zukunft Garten constructs a multi-sensory, imagination-provoking infrastructure in an ever-evolving jungle environment that explores the coexistence of technology and nature. Here, visitors are encouraged to form community in familiarizing themselves with the principles of direct action and hacktivism, as well as enjoy film-meditation, performances, and un-learning workshops.

The immersive dome of the Indigenous Deep Knowledge Circle is rooted in the cultural traditions of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians (the Chaguayavitam), local to the region surrounding CalArts. Its form is reminiscent of pre-contact homes, with sounds and videos centered on the cycles of Mother Earth.

This multimedia art exhibition offers optimistic futures through the lens of solarpunk, showcasing eco-social models and highlighting the interconnectedness between nature and technology. The exhibition showcases media art at Gallery D301, video-based works, animations, documentaries, and gaming environments at Gallery D300, and an outdoor installation series spanning CalArts’ campus. Futuring invites viewers to engage with forward-thinking ideas, encouraging them to imagine and shape our collective futures in active and innovative ways.

Featuring works by a group of intergenerational artists working across disciplines, Futuring looks beyond the present climate moment and imagines alternative futures, visualizing new possible worlds through themes of radical ecology, technology, hacktivism, hybridity, decentralization, and more. Additionally, the exhibition positions visioning and worldbuilding as active processes and creates a dynamic network that connects with the overarching storytelling of Earth Edition.

This curated series of outdoor musical performances is designed to inspire joy, raise vibrations, and expand consciousness through sound. Featuring an eclectic lineup of DJs, bands, and sonic artists whose works amplify the themes of Earth Edition, Sustainable Sounds is a space for dancing, dreaming, and celebrating, with the goal of deepening connections and building community.
